2010 in Review
It’s that time of year, and for once I thought it might be rewarding to reflect on the achievements of the last year inspired by similar yearly posts from Seth Godin and Kevin Rose amongst others… In some kind of order:
- Learnt Java and the Android SDK
- Built and launched a popular Android game, Fish Food
- Became involved in the local tech scene, in particular StartupMill
-...

'Headline' Chrome Extension
Headline is a chrome extension I developed in an evening. It brings the speed and simplicity of google reader to the rest of the web by enabling the same keyboard shortcuts on normal websites.
This extension will help if you find yourself using the google reader shortcuts around the web. Currently available are:
j/k = selects the next/previous article on the page

Bugs: Squashed.
I might as well resign myself to these updates being weekly, but hey better weekly than not at all! I have had a great week working on the game and received a ton of assets, I would say that Fish Food is now 95% complete.
Although in the last post I had hoped to focus on the side screens, instead I have worked on making the game rock-solid, halved the loading and resuming times and added saving,...

Last night I bought the domain fishfoodgame.com in preparation for adding future highscore tables and promoting the game. No going back on the name now, not after spending $6 dollars…
What does three hours on a Tuesday get you?
Lots of progress! I think the final bugs with compatibility across devices have been resolved, the game seems to run in a selection of emulators at different resolutions fine now - of course the real test will be when I acquire an actual phone to test it on..
In other news, completed tonight:
Added the code for a ‘bomb’ or ‘mine’ creature that when triggered wipes out all...
A weeks work
I don’t feel as though I have been terribly productive over the last week, but the time that has been spent working on the game / engine has resolved a few niggling issues that we’re there as a result of my inexperience with Android and Java. In no particular order, the items I have managed to complete this week:
Flexible resolution support, the game should now be supported across a...

Android Development
So, i have been meaning to post about android development since i started playing around two weeks ago and only just got around to it. The idea was to create a development diary and although it is a little late - better than never!
I have decided to bet some money and resources on Android becoming popular throughout 2010 and beyond by creating some games for the platform. I have zero experience...
Just arrived back in Sheffield after my Christmas break.. the day job starts again tomorrow :-(
Both cadyou and my personal homepage are currently offline which sucks, apparently my hosts are replacing the motherboard!
In other uninteresting news i seem to have fixed a few memory leaks in the topdown engine, and will be putting it online for people to play with just as soon as there are some...

back?
A bit of a hiatus mainly due to Christmas time with family and friends.. but also not knowing what to post about as i am currently doing little bits on various projects!
I fixed a huge stumbling block on the top-down engine yesterday which was causing objects to spawn late and ‘pop up’ on screen. Unfortunately even simple sounding issues like this are becoming complex in the engine as...

Just knocked up a ‘tags’ cloud on Cadyou that updates showing all tags on the site with the most popular being the largest.
Ok, its a bit dated.. but well. whatever.

Horrible Cadyou bugfix.
Ouch,
I started uploading some of the larger files as zipped archives to cadyou.com a couple of weeks ago and failed to test that.. err downloading them actually worked! Turns out i messed up the support slightly and zips were downloading in different formats - making them unreadable without changing the extension to .zip!
Thanks to a tipster i have fixed the bug today - so yay… download...

Here’s an entrepreneur’s effort diet. Go through the list and decide whether or not it’s worth it. Or make up your own diet. Effort is a choice, at least make it on purpose:
Delete 120 minutes a day of ‘spare time’ from your life. This can include TV, reading the newspaper, commuting, wasting time in social networks and meetings. Up to you.
Spend the 120 minutes doing this instead:
